

What Is the Circle of Fifths?
The circle of fifths is a visual diagram that shows the relationships between the 12 musical keys. Each step around the circle represents a fifth interval (7 semitones). Moving clockwise adds one sharp; moving counter-clockwise adds one flat.
For guitarists, the circle of fifths is an incredible tool. It explains chord progressions, shows you which keys are related, helps you transpose instantly, and reveals why certain chord sequences sound satisfying.
How the Circle Is Organized

The inner ring shows relative minor keys. C major’s relative minor is A minor. G major’s relative minor is E minor. And so on.
Keys next to each other on the circle are closely related: they share most of the same notes. C major and G major (a fifth apart) share all notes except one. C major and F major share all but one note. This is why chord progressions that move by fifths sound natural and flowing.
Key Signatures from the Circle
The circle is the best way to learn and remember key signatures. Start at C (no accidentals). Move clockwise to G, and you add one sharp (F#). Move to D, and you add another sharp (C#). Each step adds one sharp in a specific order: F#-C#-G#-D#-A#-E#-B#.
Moving counter-clockwise from C to F, you add one flat (Bb). To Bb, you add another flat (Eb). Each step adds one flat in the order: Bb-Eb-Ab-Db-Gb-Cb-Fb.
Instead of memorizing key signatures separately, you can derive them instantly from the circle.
Finding Relative Minors
Every major key has a relative minor that shares the same key signature. The relative minor is always three semitones (a minor 3rd) below the major key.
From the circle, the relative minor is shown in the inner ring, directly below the major key. C major = A minor. G major = E minor. F major = D minor. This relationship is crucial for understanding songs in minor keys—they often share chords with their major counterparts.
Chord Progressions from the Circle
Chords that move by a fifth (clockwise on the circle) sound especially satisfying. The I-IV progression (C to F) is a perfect 4th, which is one fifth counter-clockwise. The I-V progression (C to G) is one fifth clockwise. The V-I progression (G to C) is a very strong, resolved sound.
A vi-IV-I-V progression uses chord that form a rough shape on the circle (going counter-clockwise: A minor, F, C, G). The ii-V-I progression is the foundation of jazz and moves by 4ths/5ths all the way through.
When you understand chord progressions on the circle of fifths, you can instantly hear why some progressions work and others don’t. Progressions that move around the circle smoothly sound natural. Progressions that jump around sound jarring.
Transposing and Modulation
The circle makes transposing incredibly simple. If you’re playing a song in C major and want to move it to G major, you move one step clockwise. Every chord shifts by one fifth, but the relationships stay the same.
A I-IV-V progression in C (C-F-G) becomes I-IV-V in G (G-C-D) by moving clockwise. The chord sequence works the same way in every key because the relationships are preserved.
For modulation (a key change within a song), use the circle to find a related key that will sound smooth. Moving one step clockwise or counter-clockwise creates a seamless key change. Moving two steps creates a more noticeable shift.
Guitar Keys and the Circle
Look at the circle and you’ll notice certain keys cluster together on the sharp side (E, A, D, G, C have open strings and are naturally comfortable on guitar). The flat side (F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db) are less comfortable because fewer notes match open strings.
Understanding this layout helps you choose which key to play a song in. If a song is originally in Db major but you want open string resonance, transpose it up to D major (one step counter-clockwise on the circle plus a semitone up).
Practical Applications
Use the circle to understand song structure. Analyze a chord progression: C-F-G-C. Look at the circle. C is the center, F is counter-clockwise, G is clockwise. The progression moves out from C and returns, creating resolution.
When you’re learning songs by ear, check the circle to predict likely chord progressions. After a I chord, ii, iii, IV, or V are all common next chords. The circle shows their relationships visually.
