

What Are Intervals?
An interval is simply the distance between two notes. When you play any two notes on your guitar, you’re playing an interval. Intervals are the building blocks of everything: melodies, chords, scales, and harmony.
Every interval has a size (how many letter names apart) and a quality (major, minor, perfect, augmented, diminished). Understanding intervals transforms music theory from abstract concepts into concrete, playable ideas. You can hear intervals, shape them on the fretboard, and use them to construct exactly the sounds you want.
Interval Sizes and Semitone Counts
Intervals are measured in two ways: by letter name and by semitones (half-steps). From C, the second degree of the scale is D (one letter name up). The interval is called a second. From C to E is two letter names (C-D-E), so it’s a third. From C to G is five letter names (C-D-E-F-G), so it’s a fifth.
But you also count semitones. From C to D is 2 semitones. From C to E is 4 semitones. From C to G is 7 semitones.
Perfect Intervals: Unison (0 semitones), Fourth (5 semitones), Fifth (7 semitones), Octave (12 semitones). These intervals have an even, stable quality.
Major Intervals: Major 2nd (2 semitones), Major 3rd (4 semitones), Major 6th (9 semitones), Major 7th (11 semitones). These are open and bright.
Minor Intervals: Minor 2nd (1 semitone), Minor 3rd (3 semitones), Minor 6th (8 semitones), Minor 7th (10 semitones). These are narrower and warmer.
Augmented Intervals: One semitone wider than major or perfect. An augmented fourth (6 semitones) is between a perfect fourth and a perfect fifth.
Diminished Intervals: One semitone narrower than minor or perfect. A diminished fifth (6 semitones) is between a perfect fourth and a perfect fifth—same as an augmented fourth, but named differently based on context.
Interval Shapes on Guitar
On guitar, the same interval always has the same physical shape, regardless of which string you start on. This is incredibly powerful.
A major 3rd is always a 4-semitone interval. Play it on the low E string (E to G#) and it spans from the open string to the 4th fret. Play it on the A string (A to C#) and it’s also 4 frets. The shape repeats across all strings.
A perfect fifth is always 7 semitones. The classic power chord shape—root note on one string, then the fifth two strings lower and two frets lower—works everywhere.
If you learn interval shapes on one string, they transfer instantly to all strings. This is why learning shapes is so efficient on guitar.
Hearing Intervals
Training your ear to recognize intervals is essential. Each interval has a characteristic sound that’s instantly recognizable once you’ve heard it enough.
A major 2nd sounds like the opening of “Happy Birthday.” A major 3rd (like the opening of “When the Saints Go Marching In”) is bright and open. A perfect 4th (the opening of “Here Comes the Bride”) is hollow and open. A perfect 5th (the opening of the Star Wars theme, or a power chord) is neutral and full.
A major 6th is sweet and singing. A major 7th is bright but with a touch of tension. A minor 3rd (the opening of “Greensleeves”) is warm and introspective. A minor 7th (blues) has a plaintive, soulful quality.
An augmented 4th (tritone) is famously dissonant—the “Devil’s Interval”—with a haunting, unstable quality. A diminished 5th has a similar sound.
Spend time playing intervals and singing them. Your ear will develop the ability to recognize them instantly, which makes melody writing, improvisation, and understanding music so much easier.
Major Intervals vs Minor Intervals
The major/minor distinction matters for 2nds, 3rds, 6ths, and 7ths. Perfect intervals (unison, 4th, 5th, octave) can’t be major or minor—they can only be augmented or diminished.
A major 3rd (4 semitones) sounds open and bright. Lower it by one semitone, and you have a minor 3rd (3 semitones), which sounds warm and introspective. This distinction is fundamental to major vs minor chords.
Understanding this relationship helps you construct chords quickly. A C major chord needs C, a major 3rd (E), and a perfect 5th (G). A C minor chord needs C, a minor 3rd (Eb), and a perfect 5th (G). One semitone change, completely different character.
Using Intervals for Melody and Harmony
Intervals are the vocabulary of melody. Every melodic leap is an interval. Learn to hear and shape intervals, and you can sing or play any melody on your guitar.
Intervals also explain harmony. When two notes sound good together (consonant), it’s because they’re intervals that our ears find stable—thirds, fifths, sixths, octaves. When they sound tense (dissonant), it’s because they’re seconds, sevenths, or tritones that create tension.
For songwriting, understand intervals and you understand how to create memorable melodies and satisfying harmonic progressions. The same intervals appear in different contexts, creating a sense of unity and coherence.
Interval Inversion
If you flip an interval upside down, it inverts. A major 3rd (4 semitones) inverts to a major 6th (12 – 4 = 8 semitones). They sound different, but they’re related.
Interval inversions matter when you’re thinking about voicings. Play a C major chord in root position (C-E-G), and you have specific intervals. Play it inverted with E on bottom (E-G-C), and the intervals shift, but they’re still the same chord.
